MORE IN CAR SEATS

Infant car seats/carriers marketed by Safety1st, Cosco, Disney, and Eddie Bauer have been recalled, due to a faulty handle which can loosen and separate from the car seat. The recall was announced Dec. 18, 2009 by the Consumer Product Safety Commission, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the product’s manufacturer, Dorel Juvenile Group of Columbus, IN. About 447,000 units of the recalled product have been manufactured since January 2008. This is the fourth product recall announced this year by Dorel, which manufactures a variety of products as a licensee or private label manufacturer for popular brand names.

According to a press release, Dorel has received 77 reports of the child restraint handle fully or partially coming off the car seat/carrier, resulting in at least three injuries. No deaths have been reported. Consumers should contact Dorel for a free repair kit. The car seat/carrier is still deemed safe when properly installed in a vehicle, but should not be carried until the consumer has replaced the handle.
