Keystone RV Company is recalling certain model year 2011 fifth wheel trailers because their axles may contain cracks in the spindle welds, increasing the risk of a crash. No incidents have been reported.

The Goshen, IN-based manufacturer says the recall affects 322 units of certain Alpine, Avalanche, Fuzion, Laredo, Montana, and Mountaineer models produced between August 19, 2010 and September 1, 2010. Nearly half of the recalled trailers are Montanas.

Keystone found the defect when the axle failed when it delivered an RV to a dealer.

The axles were manufactured by Dexter of East Elkhart, IN from August 15-31, 2010. Cracks in the axle could cause the spindle to detach from the axle tube, leading to a separation of the wheel end from the vehicle.

Keystone’s list of vehicles with affected VIN numbers can be found here.

Keystone will notify owners beginning September 23, 2010. Its dealers will inspect the axles and replace them at no charge if the axle’s serial numbers match those identified by Dexter as defective.

Owners may contact Keystone at 1-866-425-4369.
