Toyota is recalling approximately 740,000 Avalon, Highlander, and Lexus vehicles because a small amount of brake fluid could leak from the brake master cylinder, affecting braking performance and ultimately posing a crash risk. No injuries or accidents have been reported.
According to media reports, an additional 600,000 vehicles in Japan are being recalled for the same reason.
The recall affects the following vehicles:
- 2004 – 2006 Highlander (non-hybrid)
- 2004 – 2006 Lexus RX330
- 2005 – 2006 Avalon
- 2006 Lexus GS300, IS250, IS350
Toyota says the leak could occur if, during maintenance, a brake fluid not containing polymers is used could cause an internal rubber seal (the brake master cylinder cup) to become dry and possibly curl when the piston moves. When this happens, a small amount of fluid may leak, causing the brake warning lamp to illuminate and creating a “spongy or soft brake pedal feel” while driving.
Owners will be notified by early November 2010. Toyota and Lexus dealers will replace the brake master cylinder cup at no charge.
