About 34,000 cribs sold at Kmart are being recalled because the drop-side hardware could malfunction or detach, posing a risk of injury, entrapment, or suffocation. The manufacturer, Victory Land Group of Bartlett, IL, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission have received 17 reports involving drop-side rail detachments. Three infants became entrapped, experiencing bruises and abrasions to the neck, back, and legs.
The recall affects Heritage Collection 3-in-1 drop-side cribs in natural and white colors, with Kmart model numbers 07-1248 and 07-1252. The Kmart name and model number are printed on the inner side of the headboard or footboard. The crib can be converted into a toddler bed or double bed.
The cribs were sold at Kmart stores nationwide from February 2007 through October 2008 for about $130.
Consumers should stop using the cribs and visit Victory Land Group online to receive a free kit to immobilize the drop-side rail, or call 1-866-499-2099.
Drop-side rails can fail for a number of reasons, including improper assembly and wear and tear. When a drop-side rail detaches, a space is created between the drop side and the mattress which could lead to an infant being suffocated, strangled or falling out of the crib.
