About 90,000 Bassettbaby drop-side cribs sold since 2000 are being recalled because the drop-side can detach, posing a risk of entrapment, suffocation or strangulation to an infant. Eighteen incidents of drop-sides malfunctioning or detaching have been reported by the manufacturer, Bassett Furniture Industries, and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. No injuries have been reported but Bassett says one child became entrapped between the mattress and the drop-side, and three children fell out of the crib. An additional 154 incidents of the drop-side hardware breaking during shipment, assembly, or use were reported.
Bassett, based in Bassett, VA, is the latest crib company to join an industry-wide recall effort that has been in progress for over a year and now represents millions of cribs.
The recall affects 45 Bassettbaby models, including names such as Mission Single, Cape Cod, Shenandoah, and Timber Creek. The cribs are wood — in a variety of finishes — and have a metal mattress support with external plastic hardware. A label on the headboard or footboard lists “Bassettbaby” or “Bassett Furniture Industries”, along with a model number. See the full list here at the company’s web site.
The recalled cribs were sold at retailers and children’s stores nationwide and online between January 2000 through August 2010 for about $200 – $500. Non-drop-side cribs are not included in the recall.
Consumers should immediately stop using the drops-side cribs and contact Bassettbaby at 1-800-308-7485 to receive a free repair kit to immobilize the drop-side.
