General Motors is recalling more than 192,000 trucks from model years 2004 through 2011 to enable child restraints to be secured. No injuries have been reported.
The recall affects only 2004-2011 Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon trucks, 2006 Isuzu I-280 / I-350 and 2007-08 Isuzu I-290 / I-370 trucks, all sold in the U.S. and Canada without rear seats. The vehicles have regular cabs as well as extended cabs without a rear seat, and both types are equipped with a front 60/40 split bench. Federal and Canadian regulations stipulate that the top tether anchor for the front center seat position be accessible to a child restraint.
The recall is strictly voluntary for vehicle owners, but it is recommended for those who intend to place child restraints in the front center seat position, even though that seat location is not recommended by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and manufacturers. Rear-facing child restraints should never be placed in the front seat because children can be seriously injured or killed by front airbags if they inflate. Parents and caregivers are strongly urged to place child restraints (car seats and booster seats) in the rear seat.
GM has not yet released a date when owners will be notified, but the automaker will be sending an insert for the owner’s manual to all registered owners of the affected vehicles. Dealers will modify the back panel trim cover and drill a hole in the panel for users to gain access to a new center tether access anchor point.
Owners may contact Chevrolet at 1-800-630-2438, GMC at 1-866-996-9463, and Isuzu Owner Relations at 1-800-255-6727.
