Mazda recalls ’09-’10 Mazda5 vehicles to inspect fuel pumps

Mazda is recalling certain model year 2009 and 2010 Mazda5 crossover vehicles because the fuel pump may potentially become inoperative, which would stall the engine and pose a crash risk. The automaker received at least one report of an engine in a “no-start condition.” No accidents or injuries have been reported.

The recall involves more than 16,000 Mazda5 vehicles, built in its Hiroshima, Japan plant from June 29, 2009 through April 28, 2010.

The company first received a report from a customer in China in December 2009, and then launched an internal investigation. It found that the residual water from the fuel tank leak check process could remain in the harness connector of the fuel pump, causing the harness connector to corrode and the connector pin to break, which would cause the fuel pump to be inoperative.  In November 2010, Mazda North American Operations, based in Allen Park, MI, decided to initiate a recall.

Mazda will notify owners beginning December 11, 2010. Dealers will inspect the fuel pump connector, and if necessary, replace the fuel pump and repair the harness connector, at no charge. Owners may contact Mazda at 1-800-222-5500.

Earlier this year, Mazda recalled certain 2007-2009 Mazda5 vehicles, along with Mazda3 vehicles, to address a sudden loss of power steering assist.
