Four types of Rolaids products — representing millions of packages — are being recalled after some consumers found “foreign material” in the products, including metal and wood particles. An unspecified number of consumers experienced vomiting, gum and tooth injury and abnormal taste, according to the manufacturer, McNeil Consumer Healthcare.

McNeil, a division of Johnson & Johnson, announced the recall, nearly four weeks after initiating a recall of Rolaids that was limited to the company’s wholesale and retail channels. That recall, on November 15, which did not require consumer action, was due to an uncharacteristic texture in Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews – Cherry Flavor, eventually traced to crystalized sugar.

The current recall affects 130 lots of the following packages:

  • Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews, Wild Cherry: 6 count, 18 count, 42 count
  • Rolaids Extra Strength Softchews, Cherry: 6 count, 18 count, 36 count
  • Rolaids Extra Strength plus Gas Softchews, Tropical Fruit: 6 count, 12 count, 36 count
  • Rolaids Multi-Symptom plus Anti-Gas Softchews, Tropical Fruit: 6 count, 12 count, 24 count

McNeil says the metal and wood particles potentially got into the products at a third-party manufacturer, which it did not disclose. The company has begun an investigation and it will not resume production of the products “until corrective actions have been implemented,” according to a statement posted online.

While the risk of adverse health effects is remote, McNeil suggests consumers discontinue using the product and visit Rolaids online to complete a refund request form, or call McNeil at 1-888-222-6036.
