Saab Cars North America has announced a recall of certain model year 2010 and 2011 Saab 9-3 vehicles because the fuel pump may seize, stopping the flow of fuel and causing a stall, posing a crash hazard.

In October, 2010, Saab opened an investigation after it received an undetermined number of reports in the U.S. of fuel pump failures. No injuries or accidents have been reported.

The recall affects about 4,400 cars. The 2010 models were produced from June 2010 to October 2010, and the 2011 models were manufactured from June 2010 to December 2010.

According to a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Saab determined that certain fuel pumps may have had incorrect specifications. The company found that the majority of those pumps failed at low mileages, most under 200 miles. Saab AB, based in Sweden, informed its U.S. operations, based in Royal Oak, MI, of the decision to announce a recall on January 13, 2010.

Saab will begin to notify owners on February 18. Its dealers will inspect the fuel pump and, if it is found to be defective, will replace it at no charge. The inspection and repair time should take approximately 2-3 hours. New fuel pumps will be supplied to Saab by TI Automotive of Greeneville, TN.

Owners may contact Saab at 1-800-722-2872.

Spyker Cars of The Netherlands purchased Saab AB from General Motors in February 2010.
