Two space heater products are being recalled because they can overheat, posing a fire hazard, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced today.
The first recall involves about 104,500 oscillating ceramic heaters manufactured by Lasko Products of West Chester, Pennsylvania. The Lasko Model 5540 units were sold primarily through Sam’s Club and other retailers between 2002 and 2004 for $39-49. Another brand name of the same heater, the Air King Model 8540, was sold by W.W. Grainger during the same time frame, and it is also affected.
Lasko has received 36 reports of the electrical connection overheating, with minor damage to the floor or carpeting in 18 of the incidents. No injuries have been reported.
Both the Lasko and Air King brand units are 20.5 inches tall, are dark grey with silver fronts, and have black vent slats. The date code of the recalled heaters, located at the bottom of the units, begin with the number “2.”
Customers should stop using the heaters and visit Lasko Products online to complete an online form, or contact the company at 1-800-363-8044. In either case, Lasko will offer customers free replacement heaters.
The second recall affects about 3,000 space heaters from Creative Heating Solutions with model numbers CH-750, CH-750FC, CH-1500 or CH-1500FC. The numbers appear on a white sticker on the rear metal panel. The other three sides of the space heater are made of wood.
The heaters, imported by Pd Sixty Distributor of Norcross, Georgia, were sold at Hancock Fabrics stores nationwide and by America’s Sewing Machine Company through direct marketing channels from October 2008 through March 2009 for $380-$480.
Pd Sixty has received one report of the heater overheating due to a loose electrical connection, resulting in the unit catching fire and causing minor property damage. No injuries have been reported.
Consumers should stop using the product and contact Pd Sixty at 1-866-367-4538 to receive a free replacement.
