Dorel recalls 800,000 Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st car seats to correct defect

Nearly 800,000 child car seats from brands such as Cosco, Maxi-Cosi, and Safety 1st are being recalled because the harness adjustment strap may loosen during use, increasing the risk of an injury in a crash situation.

The recall affects infant, toddler, and convertible restraint systems manufactured by Dorel Juvenile Group of Columbus, Indiana from May 1, 2008 through April 30, 2009. The convertible seats include the following models: Alpha Omega, Alpha Omega Elite, Enspira, Priori, Prospect, and Vantage. Infant child restraint models Mico and OnBoard are also included in the recall; they were sold as stand-alone products as well as part of a travel system that includes a stroller.

In a filing with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Dorel says that it received 143 consumer complaints through December 10, 2010. NHTSA initiated an evaluation in March, 2010 after becoming aware of the issue. In describing the defect, Dorel said the locking pawl on the center front adjuster may not rotate freely.

Consumers can still use the car seats as directed, but are strongly encouraged to contact Dorel to receive a free repair kit, which includes a small tube of non-toxic lubricant. Applying the lubricant to the pawl will enable the pawl to rotate freely and properly engage the adjustment strap. Consumers can order the repair kit online here.
