SafetyCheck Privacy Policy
SafetyCheck takes very seriously your right to privacy as well as your interest in how the information we gather is used.
Our Privacy Policy may change or evolve over time to adapt to business needs, but any changes to our Policy will be posted here in its newest version.
Information You Provide to Us
When you register to receive SafetyCheck’s e-mail alerts and/or to post a comment on SafetyCheck, we will ask you to create a username and password, and to provide us with your first and last name, e-mail address, state, and zip code. We won’t ask you for your street address, or your home or cell phone numbers, unless you specifically provide any of those to us in non-published correspondence. We urge our members not to divulge personal identifying information when posting a comment online, unless they voluntarily wish to identify themselves as speaking on behalf of a government agency, manufacturer, trade association or non-profit group and the personal identifying information is critical to establish credibility or correspondence with other members.
If you are a registered member of SafetyCheck and have subscribed to one or more of our e-mail alerts, you may use the tools on the Alerts page at any time to add e-mail alerts, change which alerts you would like to receive, or unsubscribe from any or all e-mail alerts.
SafetyCheck collects information based on its member registrations, which includes e-mail addresses, first and last names, city, state, zip, gender, and year of birth, for the explicit purpose of generating alerts involving product recalls and safety news which the member opts in to receive. SafetyCheck also collects quantifiable information on a summary basis, such as how many visits a page is receiving from members and non-member users.
Information That Is Automatically Collected
Log Files
As with most other websites, we collect and use the data contained in log files. The information in the log files include your IP (internet protocol) address, your ISP (internet service provider, such as AOL, cable company, or phone company), the browser you used to visit our site (such as Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Safari), the time you visited our site and which pages you visited throughout our site.
Cookies and Web Beacons
We do use cookies to store information when you visit our site, such as the SafetyCheck alerts described above. This could include the ability to login to some of our features, such as submitting comments, photos, and video.
Our relationships with our advertisers and e-commerce partners are certainly important to us. Some of these advertisers may use technology such as cookies and web beacons when they advertise on our site, which will also send these advertisers (such as Google through the Google AdSense program) information including your IP address, your ISP , the browser you used to visit our site, and in some cases, whether you have Flash installed. This is generally used for geotargeting purposes (showing New York real estate ads to someone in New York, for example) or showing certain ads based on specific sites visited (such as showing cooking ads to someone who frequents cooking sites).
Under no circumstances will SafetyCheck provide a list of members’ names or e-mail addresses to third parties, such as advertisers ae-commerce partners. We believe that sharing personal information is simply not good business and that short-term financial gains are not as important as long-term trust.
Of course, you may voluntarily share your personal information with an advertiser or e-commerce provider of SafetyCheck’s if you establish a relationship by purchasing a product, participating in a sponsored survey, establish an account with them, or by any other means of voluntary providing information that is required of you. Your relationship with an advertiser or e-commerce provider of SafetyCheck’s is strictly between you and them.
DoubleClick DART cookies
We also may use DART cookies for ad serving through Google’s DoubleClick, which places a cookie on your computer when you are browsing the web and visit a site using DoubleClick advertising (including some Google AdSense advertisements). This cookie is used to serve ads specific to you and your interests (”interest based targeting”). The ads served will be targeted based on your previous browsing history (For example, if you have been viewing sites about visiting Las Vegas, you may see Las Vegas hotel advertisements when viewing a non-related site, such as on a site about hockey). DART uses “non personally identifiable information”. It does NOT track personal information about you, such as your name, email address, physical address, telephone number, social security numbers, bank account numbers or credit card numbers. You can opt-out of this ad serving on all sites using this advertising by visiting http://www.doubleclick.com/privacy/dart_adserving.aspx
You can choose to disable or selectively turn off our cookies or third-party cookies in your browser settings, or by managing preferences in programs such as Norton Internet Security. However, this can affect how you are able to interact with our site as well as other websites. This could include the inability to login to services or programs, such as logging into accounts.
Deleting cookies does not mean you are permanently opted out of any advertising program. Unless you have settings that disallow cookies, the next time you visit a site running the advertisements, a new cookie will be added.
